Limeni

History

Limeni was the ancestral seat of the Mavromichalis clan, the most powerful family of Mani. Its first tower house was founded around 1762 by Pierros Mavromichalis and became the residence of his son Petros "Petrobey" Mavromichalis, who was elected Bey of Mani in 1815 and led the Maniot uprising that opened the Greek War of Independence in March 1821. Several fortified tower houses built by the extended family still stand around the small harbor, two of them now restored as boutique hotels. In 2015, an ancient Roman-era shipwreck laden with amphorae, dated to the 1st century BC, was located just off the harbor and formally declared an underwater archaeological site.
